Moygownagh village RENEWAL project 2019
In 2019, Moygownagh Community Council began an ambitious programme to develop the heritage tourism potential of its village and environs, under heritage officer Liam Alex Heffron.
Among the projects approved by Mayo County Council and carried out by volunteers and the local CE scheme, were the development of village footpaths, provision of Garrynagran footbridge, and the planting of a Green Studio designed feature-scape of landscaped shrubs and plants to enhance the village public areas and monuments.
The exciting Saints and Sinners tour of Moygownagh with a free online & smartphone app was also developed with SeaStack Media, to showcase the lessor known heritage and historical sites of the parish.
Also under the project, the scheme received computers to replace the old equipment and personal laptops that local volunteers and RSS / Tus participants had been using to collect local heritage records. These will be used to provide on-site public services promoting our local heritage and history, to visitors and locals alike.
St Cormac’s Society in turn, contributed €834.23 - the cost of a selection of flowering bulbs, which were planted by volunteers in the public green areas of Moygownagh village, including around the monuments of St Daria and St Cormac, by the national school.
Achieved working with Moygownagh Community Council, funded under the Irish Department of Rural and Community Development, through the 2018-9 Town and Village Renewal Scheme in partnership with Mayo County Council.
